Examples Of Our Work

HELPING UNDERSTAND SUCCESS USING GROUNDED CASE STUDIES

Often successful projects are studied to help duplicate the achievement. However, copying and pasting what is seen as a good project rarely has the desired outcome. Understanding this, we helped our client take a closer look at a rural communal land farmers co-operative to better understand the behaviours that led to the positive impact seen. The resulting in-depth case study provided a clear conceptual framework for our client that was informed by on-the-ground observations and research.

WALKING THE TALK

It is easy to label an initiative as being community-led and impactful. A phenomenon sometimes called truth by definition. The challenge is to truly understand what is required to live up to these important labels. Working closely with our client, we helped them clearly define what is meant by impact and community-led development in their context. Using these definitions we could then co-create organisational systems that were more capable of delivering on the actual requirements.

STRENGTHEN SYSTEMS USING THE SOCIAL RETURN ON INVESTMENT METHOD

The SROI method is a widely used to determine the broader value created by a particular initiative. While considered to be helpful in measuring the social value created, the method can be complex and subject to overstated returns.

In supporting a client using the method we not only conducted a SROI assessment on a high-value project, but also developed an easy to follow SROI manual the client could use in the future. To further leverage the method we developed a basic SROI-based screening tool. This helped to both guide grant applicants as well as help managers screen smaller projects that did not justify a full SROI analysis.

UNDERSTAND THE MEANS TO CREATE CHANGE

One of the key advantages of Human-Centred Design is that it allows for a better understanding of what needs to change to create value for those affected. Finding ways to create that value, the means, is a critical step towards optimising planned interventions.

After helping a client develop a deeper understanding of a community using a life-course profile, we explored the means and resource requirements to create the desired change in major areas of concern. This means plan helps define the specifications for planned interventions as well as guide implementers around the resources required and when they will be needed.

INNOVATING WITH COMMUNITY LIFE-COURSE PROFILES

Using a life-course approach to better understand a problem has gained significant ground as organisations attempt to understand and deal with the complexity of social problems.

In a practical application of Life Course Theory, we assisted several clients to better understand the communities they work using community profiles that reflect the life-course trajectory from conception to old age. These profiles use publicly available data sources which are layered from a national to local municipality level.
